What if you received a friend request from God? No, this isn’t intended to be a promo for the CBS series based on this premise that is still in its first season. But I have to admit that I like the concept. What if you received a friend request from God on the social media platform of your choice? If God was your social media friend, would it affect what you post, what you share, what you look at?
I don’t think you will get a new request from God on social media, but that doesn’t mean He doesn’t want to be your friend. In fact, Jesus really does want to be your friend in real life. There’s a great story in the Bible told by Dr. Luke. Some friends of a paralyzed man go to great lengths to set him before Jesus. It seems Jesus was impressed by their faith, because “When Jesus saw their faith, he said, ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven.'” (Luke 5:20)
Jesus called the paralyzed man a friend and then went on to heal him in addition to declaring that his sins were forgiven. Jesus was a great friend to this man! He also wants to be a great friend to us. But we all don’t experience close friendship with Jesus. I think the problem lies with us, not with Jesus. Some of us haven’t “accepted” his friend request yet. Still others have accepted it, but you might say we haven’t read any of his posts lately, nor talked to him, nor spent much time with him.
Grow in Friendship
For 2019, let’s pursue a deeper friendship with Jesus. Let’s make a point of trying to grow our friendship with God. Our theme for 2019 at Inspiration Community Church is GROW. And growing in our relationship with Jesus is a great place to start.
Happy New Year!
